America Reads Lesson Plan

For the past two years I have been employed as a literacy tutor for America Reads. I tutor children twice a week in Detroit Public Schools. As a literacy tutor, I receive training in ways to tutor for reading and writing with children who need extra attention.
One of my responsibilities is to create weekly lesson plans for the students I work with. It is up to the tutors to create individualized lesson plans for the children we work with. One of my favorite lessons was from last year when I worked with Yael. He loved to solve mysteries, so I turned reading short stories into a mystery by "decoding" the story and filling out a worksheet. Little did he know that he was practicing character analysis, learning vocab, and recalling the five parts of a story (Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution). Yael loved it so much that we did this same lesson for several weeks with different books. Attached below is one of these lesson plans.
